Montserrat — A Spiritual and Natural Landmark of CataloniaOne of the most important and visited places in Catalonia, the monastery of Montserrat becomes even closer and more accessible to you!
Rising more than 700 metres above sea level, Montserrat has been a place of spiritual retreat since the 8th century, when the first hermits arrived here, seeking refuge from the Moorish invasions. Later, small chapels appeared on the sites of the early hermitages.
Centuries later, after the Catalan count Guifré el Pilós restored Christian control over these lands, the famous statue of the Black Madonna — La Moreneta was discovered: a wooden figure of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child in her arms.
But the religious history of Montserrat Monastery does not end there. The site became home to one of Europe's oldest music schools and conservatories, one of the region's richest collections devoted to the world's major religions, and a historic printing tradition preserving manuscripts from the early Christian era.
During your journey with our experienced guide, you will discover this fascinating history and have the opportunity to see many of these remarkable places for yourself.
Montserrat — More Than a MonasteryFor those who are less interested in religious history, Montserrat has another side that is just as fascinating.
Montserrat is also a protected natural area and a unique mountain massif created by nature. Its extraordinary rock formations, often taking remarkably unusual shapes, were formed from ancient sediments that once lay at the bottom of a sea. Over millions of years, geological processes transformed them into the spectacular mountain landscape we see today, with its highest point rising to more than 1,200 metres above sea level.
