An Ethnographic Journey into the Heart of CataloniaDiscover the foothills of the Pyrenees and two of Catalonia’s most remarkable medieval villages — Rupit i Pruit and Besalú!
We invite you to discover one of the most fascinating ethnographic journeys in Catalonia — Rupit i Pruit & Besalú.
Catalonia is rich not only in historical heritage from different eras, but also in places of exceptional cultural value, including sites protected by UNESCO and recognized as part of humanity’s shared heritage. Our journey to Rupit i Pruit and Besalú is all about discovering this remarkable heritage.
Located between the foothills of the Pyrenees and the La Garrotxa Natural Park, these two beautifully preserved medieval villages have remained largely untouched by modern development. Each has its own unique character, history and charm.
Tour Itinerary
Besalú
Our exploration of this remarkable town begins with its atmospheric medieval bridge leading to the town gates across the Fluvià River.
The Romanesque gateway dating back to the 12th century, Santa Maria Church from the 10th century, Sant Pere Church, built in 977, and Sant Vicenç Church, dating from the 12th–13th centuries, reveal the fascinating blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture that shaped Catalonia and Spain during this period.
After spending at least one hour with our guide exploring this small and charming town, officially recognized as a Historic and Artistic Site of National Interest and declared a UNESCO heritage site in 1996, you will have at least 1.5 hours of free time to enjoy Besalú at your own pace before continuing on to a traditional Catalan lunch.
Traditional Catalan Lunch
A typical Catalan lunch — perhaps different from what many visitors are accustomed to — featuring several courses, local wine and, of course, authentic Catalan traditions.
Rupit
There are places that seem to exist beyond eras, time and political events — Rupit is a perfect example.
And now, we will try to understand why...
Medieval fortifications, a suspension bridge over the river, bright red geraniums welcoming you along the way, traditional curtains lining the main street, and ancient volcanic stone forming the streets all create the feeling of stepping back into the distant past.
The village is surrounded by the extraordinary volcanic landscape of La Garrotxa Natural Park, where many of the region's volcanoes have been dormant for thousands of years.
At least two hours in Rupit, a village of around 350 inhabitants, spent partly with your guide and partly exploring independently, will give you the opportunity to look at many aspects of the modern world from a completely different perspective.
